U.S. Marines rest in the field on Guadalcanal, circa August-December 1942.
Most of these Marines are armed with M1903 bolt-action rifles and carry M1905 bayonets and USMC 1941 type packs. Two men high on the hill at right wear mortar vests and one in center has a World War I type grenade vest. The Marine seated at far right has a Browning Automatic Rifle

The Battle

Invasion

Cannon shot opened the play. The first battle lasted 2.5 hours. The Marines easily won their place on the island, but securing the Henderson air base tower proved to be a real battle of wills. Only after the ground changed hands no less than five times, did the Marines manage to sit in the high roost.

Secret Weapon

The Japanese didn't take the dishonor lightly. The team had not spent all their time outfitting themselves to perfection in order to lose. No one was going to get away with saying they were dressed to kill.
Rejecting the concept of group hari-kari, they decided to bring out the secret weapon earlier than planned. The original idea was to used it as the topping off, like a cherry on an Ice Cream Sundae to exhibit their absolute superiority, but reality called.
Now, not later, was the right time to unveil their 40mm trench mortar! The instrument worked remarkable well to even the score.
As the Japanese remained focused on the regaining ground, the Marines changed tactics radically. They concentrated on special missions to increase points.

Troublesome Details

One enthusiastic leatherneck learned the importance of giving attention to detail. He found the Japanese documents and hotfooted it back to HQ, only to discover he should assume nothing. The top secret item read, "So Sorry Roundeyes! This is a decoy!" His first hint should have been that the document envelope was stamped "Top Secret" written in English.

Altering History

Americans were given a special mission to recover Amelia Earheart. Last coordinates were given and the soldiers had 30 minutes to find her downed flight. It was heartening to see the Marines succeed in changing history. They rescued Amelia Earhart from certain demise by using the last known coordinates to track her down. Even with all players on alert to the mission, her location was discovered with only minutes to the deadline. She was quite happy not to have made the trek by home all on her own.
<.... MIP's Amelia was relieved when historic facts did not get in the way of American ingenuity. With only minutes to go, the Americans began dragging the area within the given perimeters. They knew she had to be there and were determined they would not fail to make a score with what at first appeared to be a simple mission.

Honoring the teams

At the end of the day on Saturday, players were too exhausted to struggle with pots and pans. Cheers were heard as the catering truck pulled on site. Chicken, beans, slaw and cobbler disappeared faster than paintballs down an RT.

Sunshine

Sunday morning play began early. Some players were on the field before the staff had managed to get their donuts and coffee down. Mission were presented on the run. Getting the players off the field by 5pm was a little like trying to get kids out of a pool. Sweepstakes awards were presented midday.

Guadalcanal Scenario____Game One of the Island Hopping Campaign
The year is 1942. American Marines, grinding their teeth over the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, stage a surprise of their own by invading a little known Japanese stronghold on the island of Guadalcanal. If left alone, Japanese engineers would have continued to launch attacks from the secret air base they had installed on this remote island. It would have been a simple matter to dominate the South Pacific, opening the door to Australia, and from there...? Mad Ivan's Paintball created the Island Hopping Campaign, an anachronism which honors historic events in the Pacific Islands during WW2. Each game is based on facts of history which are used for goals and missions.

The Army of the Rising Sun was dressed to kill. The extra points for uniform authenticity gave them dignity and an honorable score. Their time spent in preparation added a color, humor and a great deal of honor to the Island Hopping Secanario game. MIP was truly impressed by their effort.
